Wave Nature of Light
Important points
- Light electromagnetic wave है।
- Vacuum में light की speed: c = 3 × 10⁸ m/s
- Relation: c = νλ
- c = speed of light
- ν = frequency
- λ = wavelength
Huygens’ Principle
Wavefront
Wavefront
1 Spherical Wavefront
2 Cylindrical Wavefront
- Linear source
- Wavefront cylindrical shape
3 Plane Wavefront

Important relation
Ray ⟂ Wavefront
Reflection
Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
i = r
Refraction
n₂₁ = v₁/v₂
Important points
- Speed
- Wavelength
- Medium में light की speed:
v = c/n
जहाँ n = refractive index।
Principle of Superposition
y₁ = a₁ sin ωt
और
y₂ = a₂ sin(ωt + φ)
Superposition Principle
- Interference
- Standing waves
- Resultant amplitude
Interference of Light
- Interference superposition principle
Coherent Sources
- Phase difference constant
- Sources ideally same wavelength की waves produce करें।
Incoherent Sources
Coherent sources:
- Constant phase difference
- Stable interference pattern
Incoherent sources:
- Random phase difference
- Stable interference pattern
Constructive Interference
Condition for constructive interference
Path difference:
Δ = nλ
n = 0, 1, 2, 3, …
Phase difference:
φ = 2nπ
Maximum intensity:
Imax = (a₁ + a₂)²
Imax = 4I₀

Destructive Interference
Condition for destructive interference
Path difference:
Δ = (2n + 1)λ/2
Phase difference:
φ = (2n + 1)π
Minimum intensity:
Imin = (a₁ – a₂)²
Imin = 0
Intensity in Interference
यदि दो waves की intensities I₁ और I₂ हैं और उनके बीच phase difference φ है, तो resultant intensity:
I = I₁ + I₂ + 2√(I₁I₂) cosφ
I₁ = I₂ = I₀
तो:
I = 2I₀(1 + cosφ)
या,
I = 4I₀ cos²(φ/2)
Important results
For constructive interference:
Imax = (√I₁ + √I₂)²
For destructive interference:
Imin = (√I₁ – √I₂)²
Equal intensities
Imax/Imin = ∞
क्योंकि ideal case में Imin = 0।
Young’s Double Slit Experiment (YDSE)
YDSE arrangement
- S = monochromatic source
- S₁, S₂ = two narrow slits
- d = distance between two slits
- D = distance between slits and screen
- P = observation point
Path Difference in YDSE
Δ = d sinθ
Small angle
sinθ ≈ tanθ ≈ y/D
Δ = dy/D
Constructive condition
dy/D = nλ
इससे bright fringe की position:
yₙ = nλD/d
Destructive condition
dy/D = (2n + 1)λ/2
इससे dark fringe की position:
yₙ = (2n + 1)λD/2d
Fringe Width
Formula
β = λD/d
- β = fringe width
- λ = wavelength
- D = slit-screen distance
- d = slit separation
Position of Bright Fringes
Bright fringe
yₙ = nλD/d
- n = 0 → Central bright fringe
- n = 1 → First bright fringe
- n = 2 → Second bright fringe
- n = 3 → Third bright fringe
Important point
Bright fringes की positions:
0, ±β, ±2β, ±3β, …
Position of Dark Fringes
Dark fringe
yₙ = (2n + 1)λD/2d
जहाँ n = 0, 1, 2, …
इसलिए first dark fringe की position:
y = λD/2d
और second dark fringe:
y = 3λD/2d
Important point
Angular Width of Fringes
θ = λ/d
Small angle approximation में:
β = Dθ
β = Dλ/d
- Linear fringe width: β = λD/d
- Angular fringe width: θ = λ/d
Angular fringe width screen distance D पर depend नहीं करती।
Effect of Changing Wavelength
β = λD/d
β ∝ λ
Example
Red λ > Blue λ
βred > βblue
Effect of Changing Slit Separation
Fringe width:
β = λD/d
Exam point
Effect of Medium on Interference
β’ = λ’D/d
β’ = β/μ
Important conclusion
β’ < β
Intensity Distribution in YDSE
I = 4I₀ cos²(φ/2)
Important points
- Bright fringe → Maximum intensity
- Dark fringe → Minimum intensity
Interference
- Fringes generally equally spaced
Diffraction
Diffraction of Light
Important points
Single Slit Diffraction
यदि slit width a है, तो minima की condition:
a sinθ = nλ
n = ±1, ±2, ±3, …
First minimum
a sinθ = λ
Small angle
θ ≈ λ/a
Width of Central Maximum
First minima दोनों sides पर:
a sinθ = λ
Small angle approximation:
θ ≈ λ/a
इसलिए angular width of central maximum:
2θ = 2λ/a
W = 2Dλ/a
Important conclusion
Central maximum की width:
W ∝ λ
और
W ∝ 1/a
Polarisation of Light
Unpolarised Light
Examples
- Sunlight
- Candle light
- Ordinary bulb light
Plane Polarised Light
Important terms
Plane of vibration: वह plane जिसमें vibrations होते हैं।
Plane of polarisation: वह plane जो vibration direction के perpendicular होता है।
Plane of vibration और plane of polarisation एक-दूसरे के perpendicular होते हैं।
Polaroid
- Sunglasses
- Camera filters
- LCD screens
- Glare reduction
- Photography
- Optical instruments
- Stress analysis
Polariser और Analyzer
Arrangement
Unpolarised light → Polariser → Plane polarised light → Analyzer → Detector
Malus’ Law
I = I₀ cos²θ
- I₀ = intensity of incident plane-polarised light
- I = transmitted intensity
- θ = angle between polariser and analyzer axes
Special cases
जब:
θ = 0°
तो:
I = I₀
जब:
θ = 90°
तो:
I = 0
Brewster’s Law
Brewster’s Law:
μ = tan iₚ
जहाँ μ = refractive index of medium।
Important result
Brewster angle पर reflected ray और refracted ray के बीच angle:
90°
iₚ + r = 90°
Reflection द्वारा Polarisation
Important points
- Relation:
μ = tan iₚ
- Brewster angle पर:
iₚ + r = 90°
Polarisation
Applications
- Anti-glare sunglasses
- 3D movies में
- LCD displays में
- Communication systems में
- Stress analysis में
- Optical instruments में

Important Conceptual Questions
Answer:
β = λD/d
Important Numerical Tips
- Wavelength → metre
- Distance → metre
- Slit separation → metre
- Frequency → Hz
Fringe width → β = λD/d
λ = βd/D
d = λD/β
D = βd/λ
